The guide maintains the angular position, relative to a stationary machine component (16), of a machine tool slide (20) which is displaceable in a plane defined by an X-axis and a Y-axis at right angles. The slide is mounted on a holder (36) to be freely displaceable parallel to the X-axis and the holder is mounted to be freely displaceable parallel to the Y-axis in the stationary machine component. Alternatively, two pairs of guide links arranged symmetrically to the slide are provided, each pair comprising two guiding links which are joined to one another in an articulated manner and form a right angle and one of which is articulated on the slide and the other is articulated on the stationary machine component. The articulated joints may be pin joints or universal joints.
