PURPOSE:To enhance the throughput for write and read and reduce a probability of the occurrence of uncorrectable data error at a read time by providing a means which generates and holds defect information of a magnetic tape medium, a means which compares defect information with a prescribed threshold, and a means where the comparison result is stored. CONSTITUTION:When an error is detected in read data, pointer information is sent to an error correcting circuit 24 from a signal quality detecting circuit 21, and data is corrected and is transmitted to a host system. In case writing data, it is checked whether data is written correctly or not through a reading head 11 near a write head 15. When the output of a counting circuit 25 of average errors of one track is larger than the output of a reference value setting circuit 26, the output in case a comparing circuit 27 is transmitted to the host computer through a microprogram control circuit 29, and this comparison output is copied to another magnetic tape medium when the processing is terminated. |
