In the known heat pumps, a refrigerant which is not harmless is principally subjected to a phase change. The conversions into the liquid or gaseous physical state mainly involve considerable losses of work. According to the process belonging to the invention, air is preferably used as the working medium, and the gaseous physical state is retained in changes of state which proceed predominantly isothermally. The associated heat transfers are completed in a direct manner, i.e. without interposed heat exchanger and changeover processes. The heat generator (see Figs. 1 and 2 of the description) belonging to the invention contains the device for directly receiving the compression heat, in the form of a pressure vessel (4) partially filled with liquid and also one or more spray nozzles (6.3) in the working space (2.1) of the working cylinder (2) for spraying in liquid from heat sources of the environment. For the production of heating water at 40 DEG C with a heat source temperature of 10 DEG C, a performance number of 6.1 can be achieved, in contrast to about 3.0 with known heat pumps. The process and generator can in general be used where heat is required for heating buildings and for hot water production. <IMAGE>
