A fuel injection system is proposed which serves for the fuel supply of a mixture-compressing, externally-applied ignition internal combustion engine. The fuel injection system comprises a metering valve (10), the movable valve part (14) of which opens more or fewer metering apertures (29) from a fuel feed line (23) to a spring chamber (30) of a differential pressure valve. In each spring chamber (30) a valve spring (35) and a valve seat (31) is arranged, with which a valve diaphragm (27) interacts, on which on the other side a counter chamber (26) is provided. In its starting position the movable valve part (14) closes the metering apertures (29) and with a starting control edge (62) opens a bypass ring groove (63) to the fuel feed line (23). From the bypass ring groove (63) a bypass line (64) with a restrictor (65) leads to each spring chamber (30) so that when the internal combustion engine is switched off fuel can pass, by way of the bypass line (64), into the spring chambers (30) and can supplement any fuel leaking out by way of the injection valves (34). <IMAGE>
