PURPOSE:To obtain a film for use in a magnetic recording medium superior in surface property, traveling performance, and durability by incorporating fine particles in a specified particle size range in a specified proportion range in an aromatic polyamide or aromatic polyimide film to form fine protuberances in a specified height range from the surface of the film. CONSTITUTION:Since an aromatic polyimide or polyimide has a heat resistance of >=200 deg.C high temp., fine particles sized in 5-500mum are incorporated in said film in the ragne of 0.03-5wt% basing on said film so as to form 10<4>-10<8>pieces/mm.<2> protuberances having a height of 3-50nm and a diameter of <=10nm on one side of the film. The film thus formed is used for the base film. As said fine particles, inorg. elements such as MgO, Al2O3, SiC, oxides carbides, nitrides, etc. of Cu, Co, and Fe, are usable. A magnetic layer is formed on this base film and a high-density recording medium excellent in traveling performance, magnetic characteristics, etc., can be obtained. |
