PURPOSE:To obtain position information suitable for digital processing with high reliability by fixing permanent magnets which are arranged according to a specific rule to the 1st member, and then fixing Hall elements or MR element which are operated with the magnetic flux of those permanent magnets to the 2nd member. CONSTITUTION:A permanent magnet group 2 which is arrayed according to the specific rule is fixed to a movable member 1 which reciprocates linearly, and Hall elements 4A, 4B, and 4C facing respective arrays of the permanent magnet group 2 are fixed to a fixed member 3 facing the movable member 1 closely. Consequently, the respective Hall elements 4A, 4B, and 4C are operated with the magnetic flux from one magnetic pole of the respective arrays 2A, 2B, and 2C of the facing permanent magnet group 2. Outputs of the respective Hall elements 4A, 4B, and 4C are applied to level comparing circuits 5A, 5B, and 5C and converted into binary signals. Then, a binary-decimal converting circuit 6 converts the binary numbers outputted from the level comparing circuits 5A, 5B, and 5C into decimal numbers, which are outputted to a processing circuit 7.
