The invention relates to a safety ski binding having a rear heel retainer and a front jaw, both of which are arranged on a sole-bearing plate or the like which can be swivelled about a pin arranged in the central region of the sole-bearing plate. The heel retainer is held in the ski-off position by means of a catch member of a spring-loaded catch device. The object of the invention is to provide a safety ski binding which is independent of the ski boot, is of simple construction, in which the sole plate is merely a bearing plate for the ski boot, that is to say it does not lift up from the ski on front release, and in which a ski brake which does not require manual actuation may, if appropriate, be incorporated into the rear sole retainer on the ski side. This object is achieved in that the heel retainer which can be catch-locked in the ski-off position is fastened so as to be capable of swivelling on the sole-bearing plate, preferably on an elevated end section, and the catch device with the catch member is firmly mounted on the ski.
