PURPOSE:To reduce the diameter and the length in the direction of width of an automatic transmission gear, by a method wherein a drum brake having a space therein is installed in order to fasten a given one of planetary gears, a plurality of clutches radially piled up are located to a driving shaft at the inside and the outside of a brake. CONSTITUTION:A forward clutch 20 and a coasting clutch 21 are arranged in parallel with each other to the side, on the side located away from an engine, of a planetary gear unit 14 situated on a turbine shaft 13. A first brake 23 is disposed in the direction of radius and outwardly of the clutch 21, and thereby, the two clutches are positioned at the interior of a drum 23a of a first brake. A reverse clutch 24 is disposed in the direction of radius and outwardly of the clutch 20 and to the side of a first clutch 23, and this reduces the size of a whole transmission gear, resulting in facilitation of mounting and manufacture.
