A sterile ointment base which is suitable for use in the eye comprises one or more paraffins and acetylated lanolin. An ointment can comprise an active constituent, for example an antiallergic medicament, and the ointment base. The ointment can be aliquotted into a medicament container at a temperature which is higher than 50 degree C.
