摘要 PURPOSE:To automate the centering of a cylindrical workpiece on a vertical lathe or the like, by measuring the displacements of the peripheral surfaces of the upper and lower portions of the cylindrical workpiece while rotating it, to correct the inclination of the axis of the workpiece, and by measuring the displacement of the peripheral surface of the central portion of the workpiece while rotating it, to correct the eccentricity of the workpiece. CONSTITUTION:In automatic centering work, a workpiece 4 is set after jacks 1 are moved down to the lowest positions and a chuck 2 is compressed inwards. The chuck 2 is then expanded outwards into light contact with the workpiece 4. The workpiece, the jacks and the chuck are rotated as a whole so that values indicated by a measuring unit 3 in contact with the workpiece are read at four points indexed by the jacks. The inclination of the workpiece 4 is determined on the basis of the values, and corrected by the jacks 1. The workpiece 4, the jacks 1 and the chuck 2 are rotated again as a whole so that values indicated by the measuring unit 3 are read at sixteen points indexed in a similar manner. The eccentricity of the workpiece 4 is determined on the basis of the values, and corrected by the chuck 2. Since the centering of the workpiece is thus automatically performed on the basis of data indicative of the changes in the outside diameter of the workpiece detected by the measuring unit, time and trouble are much reduced.
