A container for balls, for example for tennis balls for a ball-projecting machine, comprises a plurality of parallel shafts (26) which are arranged adjacently and have a cross-section which corresponds to the diameter of the ball, and whose upper openings lie in a horizontal plane (E). When returned, the balls (30) are placed in the container from above so that they are distributed over the individual shafts (26). If balls are lost, this can be recognised immediately by the fact that some of the shafts (26) are not completely filled. <IMAGE>
