Endless yarns of high strength and high modulus carbon fibres are produced by melt spinning pitch with a meso phase content of 70 to less than 100%, at a temp. 50-140 deg.C higher than the pitch softening temp. The spinning nozzles have a non-circular cross-section with one or more peripheral parts with a configuration alternating about an imaginary circle. Endless yarn, with the desired yarn count and almost circular cross-section, is collected and then subjected to thermal hardening and carbonisation steps.
