<p>A tin-based or lead-based alloy (e.g. a bearing alloy) which is of a composition such that, on solidifying from a melt, it becomes dispersion strengthened by particles comprising SbSn cuboids and/or Cu6Sn5 needles is grain refined by arranging that the alloy, when in a molten condition prior to casting, contains nucleant particles of PbSe and/or PbTe, and that the melt is solidified so that the nucleant particles act as nucleant sites for the SbSn cuboids and/or Cu6Sn5 needles, to produce refinement of the SbSn cuboids and/or Cu6Sn5 needles. The Se and/or Te can be added as such or as a suitable master alloy, e.g. an antimony-based master alloy.</p> |
