PURPOSE:To easily diagnose writing to and reading from all tracks of a recording medium by setting a recording area from a delay index point to an index point in normal mode or from the index point to the delay index point in write/ read diagnostic mode. CONSTITUTION:A delay index signal generating circuit 50 is actuated with an index signal C to count a reference clock (e) having a 1-data-byte period, and generates a delay index signal (d). In write/read diagnostic mode, a write/read starting point (c') and a write/read ending point (d') are determined with the index signal (c) and delay index signal (d) respectively, only a record TR for write/read diagnosis, and G1=G10+TR+G11, where G10 and G11 are gaps before the diagnostic record TR and a head address HA. In normal mode, on the other hand, the delay index signal (d) is regarded as the write/read starting point (d') and the index signal (c) is regarded as the write/read ending point (c') and a home address HA and records R0-RN are used. |
