The apparatus serves for the production of code bars consisting of sheet-metal strips with fixing flanges and having a plurality of codes, each corresponding to one of the digits 0 to 9, in the form of slots of single or double width punched out of the sheet-metal strip, the slots being separated from one another by single-width webs which remain. The apparatus comprises a punching tool which can be inserted into a press and has female punching dies which can be advanced in accordance with the required digit by linear displacement and are situated on a guide plate of a bottom part of the tool, furthermore having male punching dies which can be advanced synchronously with the associated female punching dies by rotation and can be retracted into a top part of the tool, and finally having a set of cutting punches between each male punching die and the associated female punching die. The male punching dies for each digit of the figure or number to be coded are formed by corresponding projections and spaces on the circumference of a wheel. During the punching stroke, the projections force the corresponding cutting punches of the associated set through the material of the sheet-metal strip into the associated female punching die.
