PURPOSE:To increase the heat transfer area per unit passage volume, by packing wire nets as a layer or providing a punched metal sheet in the gas passage of the aftercooler of a reciprocating engine. CONSTITUTION:When a compressing piston 1 is moved from the bottom dead center to the top dead conter, gas in a compression space 2 is compressed and heats. After the gas is cooled through a hole 4 packed with wire nets as a layer in an aftercooler 3, the gas enters into a regenerator 5 so that the gas is cooled further as a heat exchange is performed between the gas and a regenerating material 6. The gas then enters into an expansion space 8 through a pipe 7. When an expanding piston 9 whose phase is about 90 deg. ahead of the compressing piston 1 is moved toward the bottom dead center, the gas is expanded and its temperature drops. When the expanding piston 9 is moved toward the top dead center, the gas in the expansion space 8 is not compressed but pushed to flow through the pipe 7 and absorb heat. The gas is then heated by the regenerator 5, supplies heat to a coolant passage through the wire nets or punched metal sheet or the like 21, and enters into the compression space 2. |
