The present invention relates to a spiral-type total travel automatic chuck with a built-in fluid motor. The chuck 1 with a spiral ring 4 is automated by the addition of a fluid motor 5 mounted coaxially at the rear of the ring, rotationally driving it through the use of a claw coupling 20. The motor has a hollow shaft 12 allowing bars to be passed through the spindle of the machine. It is constructed so that it is of low weight, and is slim, whilst having a high starting torque. The passage in the shaft must be approximately 1/3 of the outside diameter. This chuck may be used statically or dynamically on a rotating spindle. It can be powered, in the case of a machine which does not have a spindle feed, by the twin-groove fluid inlet of the half collar 16A. <IMAGE>
