<p>An optical fibre splice for plastics packaged optical fibres employs a length 5 of heat shrink tubing to hold together two prismatic bodies 1 and 2 to grip the bared ends of the fibres in a Vee groove formed in one or both of the bodies. A further length 12 of heat shrink tubing anchors to this assembly the plastics packaging of both fibres beyond the regions from which this packaging has been stripped. Preferably each of the prismatic bodies is made of glass that has been drawn from a preform produced by fusing together a stack of shaped glass sheets. <IMAGE></p> |
