<p>PURPOSE:To produce benzophenone useful as a fixer of perfumery, etc., by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of diphenylmethane with O2 in the presence of one or more catalytic active substances selected from the oxides of V, Mo, W and Ti. CONSTITUTION:Benzophenone is produced by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of diphenylmethane with O2-containing gas in the presence of one or more catalytic active substances selected from the group of the oxides of V, Mo, W and Ti, e.g. vanadium pentoxide, ammonium salt of vanadium, etc. which can be converted to the oxide by heating, molybdenum trioxide, tungsten trioxide, etc., titanium dioxide, etc. Preferably, the catalyst is composed of two or more kinds of the above oxides, and esecially, the activity and the selectivity of the catalyst are improved by using vanadium pentoxide and titanium oxide as the components.
