PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and to change over surely the reproducing direction by driving a locking member of a changeover gear switching the direction of reproduction by an end detecting mechanism to release the lock of changeover gear and attain end detection. CONSTITUTION:When the turning of a reel stand stops at tape end in the automatic reversing, a reel PLAY gear 40 is stopped and the turning of a friction gear 41 meshed therewith is stopped. An end detecting arm 56 coupled to an end detecting washer 55 whose torque is provided by a gear 41 in the direction K via an engaging pin 56a and sliding a cam face of a cam 54a of a friction gear 54 via a sliding pin 56b with the torque of the washer 55 is stopped at a position where the pin 56a reaches the maximum diameter of the cam 54a and shaken largely by being engaged with a shim part 54 of the gear 54. A boss 56c of the arm 56 presses and turns an N/R lock arm 46, releases the locking of an N/R gear 47 and a PLAY lock lever 18 and the switching operation is attained.
