Process for the preparation of 5-ethylidenebicyclo[2.2.1]hept- 2-ene and 5-methylene-6-methylbicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene

The application relates to a continuous process for the safe preparation of the products mentioned in the title from (di)cyclopentadiene and 1,2-butadiene. The risk of explosion of the reaction mixture due to external ignition is excluded by carrying out the process in a tube reactor at comparatively low pressure in the presence of C4- to C8-(cyclo)alkanes. The process permits the preparation of the process products with a high yield, relative to 1,2-butadiene reacted.
