The screw cylinder 1 for a screw extruder has a flow channel for cooling and/or heating media, which flow channel is disposed between two concentrically nested shell components 2 and 3 and is delimited by a helically wound insert body 13. The insert body 13 consists of a heat-resistant plastics profile strand having an approximately T-shaped cross-section and having a profile web 16 and two profile flanges 17 and 18. Because of the inherent elasticity of the plastics profile strand, this has a sealing effect between the two concentrically nested components 2 and 3 and thus forms a helically extending flow channel in the annular hollow void 4. <IMAGE>
