An adaptor for audio tape recorders is proposed which permits the use of small cassettes (so-called micro cassettes) in audio tape recorders which are in fact intended for the use of larger audio tape cassettes (so-called compact cassettes). The drive for the audio tape in the micro cassettes (2) takes place by means of a capstan (48) which is mounted in the adaptor (1) and for its part is releasably connected via a gear mechanism to the capstan (55) of the audio tape recorder. By actuating an operating button (5), the gear connection between the two capstans (48, 55) is established, by actuating operating buttons on the audio tape recorder this gear connection is dissolved. <IMAGE>
