The invention relates to a fuel rod spacer grid for nuclear fuel elements, consisting of interengaging grid strips (12, 20) which form between themselves grid cells (7) for accommodating the fuel rods. Projections (14a, 14b) formed on the grid strips (12, 20) serve to position the fuel rods in the grid cells (7), it being the case that in each grid cell the projections (14a) of two grid strips not opposite one another form a flow obstacle for the axial coolant flow, and that the projections (14b) formed on the two other grid strips essentially do not form a flow obstacle. When the fuel rods are seated loosely in the grid cells, the coolant flow then has the effect of pressing the fuel rods away from the projections (14a) forming an obstacle so that they make definite contact with the projections (14b) not forming an obstacle.
