PURPOSE:To provide an electrochromic element fast in responsivity, long in life, and superior in memory characteristics by forming an electrolytic layer of a solid-state layer made of a water-insoluble tetravalent metal polybasic acid salt having H<+> ion conductivity. CONSTITUTION:An electrochromic element is formed by laminating a transparent electrode layer 3, an electrochromic material layer 4, and an electrolytic layer 5 between 2 substrates 2, 6, at least one of those is transparent, and said layer 5 is a solid-state layer made of an H<+> conducting, water-insoluble tetravalent metal polybasic salt. Said tetravalent metal is Ti, Sn, Zr, Hg, Ce, Th, Ge, etc., and said polybasic acid is phosphoric acid, arsenic acid, silicic acid, etc., and said acid is an acidic salt. Since the electric conductivity of said salt depends on no electrons but H<+> ions, said salt does not cause electrolytic reaction producing H2 gas, and has higher proton density necessary for proton transfer than other electrolytes and has superior performance. |
