PURPOSE:A composition providing a flame-retardant substance having improved physical properties, surface hardness, and freeze resistance by crosslinking, obtained by adding specific amounts of specified organic flame-retardant, antimony trioxide, zinc oxide, etc. to an ethylene an alpha-olefin copolymer and a high-density polyethylene. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. base polymer consisting of 20-75wt% ethylene an alpha-olefin copolymer (e.g., ethylene butene-1 copolymer, etc.) and 80-25wt% polyethylene having >=0.920 specific gravity is blended with 20-50pts.wt. organic flame-retardant (e.g., decabromodiphenyl ether, etc.) having >=50wt% bromine content, 10-30pts.wt. antimony trioxide, 1-30pts.wt. zinc oxide and 5-60pts.wt. magnesium silicate, and crosslinked with a crosslinking agent such as dicumyl peroxide, etc., to give the desired composition. USE:Useful as a covering material for electric wire and cable, and as an electrical insulating material.
