This apparatus comprises three drive units for exchanging tools. They are the drive for the tool magazine (1), for the moving of the double gripper (4) running parallel to the machine spindle (2) and for the swivelling of the said gripper into various positions. These movements are usually accomplished by hydraulic or pneumatic means, which however are complex because they require many limit switches and solenoid valves. Also, a hydraulic design for example requires cylinder-piston combinations, some with long strokes, which on account of the exchange sequence of the tools have to have a plurality of intermediate positions for the piston. The apparatus dispenses with a considerable amount of this complexity by using electric servo motors (6,7,8) of infinitely variable speed for the three drives. Apart from saving parts, this also has the effect that movement sequences of the tool exchange can flow one into the other, saving time. <IMAGE>
