In order to make straw and hay bales essentially independent of the influences of moisture, a tension-resistant and pressure-resistant rod for shaping and/or limiting elongate cavities in said bales is proposed. These rods can be designed as cores and be pulled out of the bales again after the bale-pressing operation. However, the rods can also be made tubular and have perforated walls, so that the bale moisture can still escape even when the rods are still located in the bales. These rods are removed from the bales before or at the same time as the bales are broken open.
