The invention relates to a labelling station for labelling articles. The labels are held on the end of a pile by means of holding elements which only slightly overlap the label edge, so that the labels can be removed from the pile by means of a removal element whose glued receiving surface rolls on the front of the labels. To prevent label removal by the removal element, the holding elements or additional holding elements are driven forwards so that they largely overlap the edge of the pile. A control device is used for controlling the holding elements during the intervals of the removal. The control device also controls a label magazine which can be moved forwards and backwards. The holding elements and the label magazine are controlled in a co-ordinated manner such that when label removal is prevented for only a brief period of time only the holding elements are actuated, whereas if a longer period is desired for preventing label removal first of all the holding elements and then the label magazine are activated. Since label removal is prevented exclusively by the holding elements, the movement of the label magazine can take place very slowly, which is beneficial for the drive and the loading. Furthermore, during forward movement of the label magazine, label removal is prevented by the holding elements until the pile in the magazine has settled down after the forward movement of the label magazine.
