A matched-steel embossed multi- ply paper sheet (9), particularly suitable for use as a paper towel, comprises an embossing pattern having a background arrangement of alternately protruding and depressed deflected zones (10 and 11) spaced apart by a substantially undeflected neutral plane (12).
