The invention relates to an electrochemical storage cell (1) on the basis of sodium and sulphur, having an anode compartment (6) and a cathode compartment (5) which are separated from one another by a solid electrolyte (3) which conducts alkali metal ions. According to the invention, the cathode compartment is charged with the sulphur (13) and an additive (14) mixed therewith. The latter is preferably a further chalcogen or its chemical compound. A possible additive (14), in particular, is selenium or a selenium compound. This additive (14) reacts very rapidly with the sodium, additional energy being liberated in the process. The product formed during the reaction has the property that it reduces the melting point of Na2S2. Thus, a considerably more exhaustive discharge of the storage cell (1) is possible than is possible in the previously known devices of this type. <IMAGE>
