The main claim relates to an open fireplace with built-in heat accumulator for heating living spaces. The aim of the invention is further to develop the accumulator core of the main claim and to store the heat removed from the smoke gases in a downstream storage heater. The downstream heating box of conventional construction, which is inserted in the path of the smoke take-off and which is divided into a downward and an upward flue by a central partially continuous partition, cannot take on any accumulator functions at all. Moreover, the increase of the heating surface by the box surface is relatively small, and the partition between downward and upward flue takes on an undesirable heat exchange. According to the solution according to the invention, the heat removed from the smoke gases is stored in a box which is preferably closed on three sides and the for example hat-shaped downward and upward flues of which are surrounded by pourable and storable materials, there being provided in each case to reduce the undesirable heat exchange and to prevent heating by the combustion chamber, which is at a higher temperature, a heat-insulating partition.
