A press section for a papermaking machine has multiple press rolls with means to guide the web into the press rolls for water removal. At least one of the rolls has an outer annular layer surrounded and supported by a cast-iron core. The outer layer is formed of a ferrous alloy, having a chromium content of 15-35 percent, which gives a smooth surface that permits non-picking separation of the web from the roll without the need for external lubrication of the surface. Pref. the roll is produced by centrifugal casting and has a chromium content of 25 percent in the outer layer to inhibit corrosion and give sufficient hardness.
