The device for controlling the fuel/air mixture of an internal combustion engine in the excess air range has a mixture former which meters the fuel and can be controlled as a function of the signals of at least one probe (6) which is arranged in the exhaust gas line (5) of the internal combustion engine and responds to the partial pressure of the oxygen. The probe has a hollow element (8) which is composed of a solid electrolyte, encloses an interior space (11) and has an outer electrode (9) which is arranged on its outer surface and is fed with exhaust gas, and has an inner electrode (10) which is arranged on its inner circumference, and fed with a reference gas. In order to achieve a control for the fuel/air ratios lambda > 1, the inner electrode (10) is fed with a reference gas whose oxygen content is exactly the same as the oxygen content in the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine corresponding to a desired fuel/air ratio lambda . For this purpose, the inner space (11) of the hollow probe element (8) is sealed from the outside in a gas-tight manner and filled with an appropriate reference gas. <IMAGE>
