PURPOSE:To simplify the structure and improve the restoration performance of a handle by arranging an actuator for controlling the engagement preload between a rack bar and a pinion gear onto a rack yoke part and controlling said preload during 1 low-speed traveling or when the handle is restored. CONSTITUTION:A plunger 5 is fixed onto the back surface of a rack yoke 3, and said plunger 5 is pressed by a belleville spring 6 and applies an engagement preload onto a rack bar 1 and a pinion gear. The plunger 5 is attracted in the direction for reducing said engagement preload by the excitation of a solenoid 4. Said solenoid 4 is excited on the basis or a car stop signal or a low- speed signal supplied from a car-speed sensor 7. Further, said solenoid 4 is excited on the basis of each signal supplied from sensors 9a and 9b when the rack bar 1 is shifted right or left by the steering wheel operation, even if the amount of shift is within a prescribed value. Therefore, the above-described preload is reduced when a car stops or the car travels in low speed or a steering wheel is restored, and the restoration performance of the steering wheel is improved. |
