In a machine tool, a holder comprises a deformable sleeve 2 for gripping a rod or tool, a fluid-filled annular space 7 around the sleeve and pressure means 11 acting axially on the fluid to cause the sleeve to deform. The fluid may be silicone putty. The spring 11 acts through a piston 10 which can be withdrawn as in Specification 1,035,197. During cutting, the shock forces cause the putty to become solid and resist vibration. |
