A running wheel of a roller has wheel flanges arranged at a distance from one another and intended to dip into the grooves of a conveyor belt, between which flanges a braking element which is seated on the ribs of a conveyor belt is arranged. This braking element is in the shape of a ring with a smaller diameter than that of the wheel flange and engages with play with its inner circumference a cylindrical running wheel component arranged between the wheel flanges. This running wheel component is mounted on an axle held in a wheel fork. A brake block is attached to the back of the wheel fork, against which block the circular braking element presses at the top when the underside of the running roller is placed on the ribs of a conveyor belt. In order to avoid noise and to reduce wear, elastically resilient centring elements are connected relative to the wheel axle between the braking element and the cylindrical running wheel component in order to provide central bearing of the braking element.
