PURPOSE:To enable to form an image free from roughness and having a natural tone, by modulating the arranging pitch of image-forming elements in accordance with gradation levels under non-quantization. CONSTITUTION:An image is formed by operating the image-forming elements (e.g., dot pins or ink dots) by an image-forming signal (b) produced in accordance with a density signal (a) for the image to be formed. Pulse signals S1-S10 having the same width and the same level are arranged in a time series manner under non-quantized arranging pitches. The arranging pitches between the image- forming elements E(1)-E(10) arranged in one-to-one correspondence with the pulse signals S1-S10 are in the relationship of P1=P2=P3<P5=P6<P4<P7<8< P9, and they are not made to be multiples of the minimum arranging pitch P1, that is, they are not quantized. Thus, arranging the pitch P of the image-forming elements E is continuously modulated in accordance with the gradation levels to be expressed, whereby it is enabled to form an image having a desired tone without losing naturalness. |
