To cut foodstuffs into strips, cubes or slices, the product to be cut is pushed, so as to emerge from a chamber (1) through an opening, against a stop plate (4) having a switching element (17). When the latter comes into contact with the product to be cut, a controlling operation is triggered, which interrupts the drive for the pressing ram (3) and initiates a pivoting movement of the stop plate (4). During the pivoting movement, the stop plate (4) is moved out of the projection cross-section of the outlet opening, a cutting member (7) following the stop plate (4). The drive for the pivoting movement of the stop plate (4) is derived from a shaft (8) which drives the cutting member (7). Whereas the cutting member (7) rotates continuously, the transmission of the drive for the pivoting movement of the stop plate (4) is constructed such that the stop plate (4) is pivoted discontinuously, to be precise in such a way that the pivoting movement is interrupted while the pressing ram (3) is performing an advancing movement. <IMAGE>
