For picking up, cutting and distributing cylindrical fodder bales rolled up by round balers and ensiled in airtight plastic sheaths, an essentially two-part bale distribution appliance (2) consisting of a bale pick-up (4) and an appliance frame (3) is provided, the bale pick-up (4) and appliance frame (3) being connectable to one another so as to be capable of being coupled and uncoupled. With the appliance frame (3) uncoupled, the fodder bale (6) is impaled by the tines (5) of the bale pick-up (4) after the plastic sheath (7) has been opened. After the removal of the plastic sheath (7), the fodder bale (6) is placed into the receiving space (9) of the appliance frame (3) and the bale pick-up (4) and appliance frame (3) are coupled to one another. After this, the fodder bale (6) is split up by means of a displaceable cutting spade (17). Subsequently, the split fodder bale (6) is pushed out of the receiving space (9) rearwards by a pushing-out device (22) and falls onto the fodder passage or is fed to cutting rollers (25) which can be followed by a transverse band (26). <IMAGE>
