The invention is designed to protect electrical or electronic circuitry in conditions of high external fluid pressure, for example in undersea equipment. The principle is to totally immerse the circuitry in a dielectric liquid which, being incompressible, is able to balance external pressure without change in volume. A rigid box has openings to allow access to the circuit elements, two sealed holes for the input and output electrical cables, valves for filling and emptying the container, and an opening over which a rigid membrane (5) is placed. The membrane transmits external pressure to the interior, whilst maintaining a physical barrier between the external and internal ambients. The pressure in the interior may be held slightly in excess of the external pressure so that any pressure differential will result in an outward flow of dielectric liquid rather than an ingress of the external ambient. The membrane can be tensioned by an arrangement in which a spring (10) bears against a stirrup (8) fixed to the wall and presses on the membrane.
|
