The terminal for video communication, presented with the invention, having a television screen arranged in a vertical format for reproducing characters, graphics and images allows both still images to be displayed preferably in vertical format and moving grey-scale or colour images to be reproduced in horizontal format (television standard). For this purpose, the lines of the screen are controlled over the narrow side and during the reproduction of moving images, it is additionally made possible for areas remaining free to be used for representing still displays, for example characters and graphics. The terminal according to the invention is thus suitable for combining in itself the features of data display devices, the features of a video telephone station and, if necessary, also the features of a television receiver in itself. As a result, only a single device is needed for all the above requirements which results in considerable space and cost saving.
