An anti-skid chain for vehicle wheels is disclosed, having an inner open side chain and a continuous, outer side chain and having a tensioning chain, in which, for the purpose of easy and rapid fitting without moving the vehicle, the tensioning chain is guided from one end of the inner side chain through a guide element at the other end of the inner side chain and from there via the wheel contact surface through a first and second guide element in the outer side chain before the tensioning chain is clamped in the outer side chain by means of a hook at the end. In the side chain section between the hook at the end and the last guide element, an elastic connecting element is engaged and clamped under extension against the outer side chain. The anti-skid chain lying on the tyre is subsequently automatically tensioned when the vehicle is started, a tensioning chain section being drawn over the wheel contact surface which has remained free of chains during fitting.
