In chemically or mechanically produced cavities of the foam mat, fire extinguishing agents (free-flowing powder or mineral fibres) are enclosed and, in the event of a fire, these agents escape at the point of the fire due to melting of the foam and stifle or extinguish or retard the flames. Before this, the fire extinguishing agents conserved in the foam provide very effective soundproofing and heat insulation. Taking into account the conditions in the engine compartment of motor vehicles, the foam mat can be fastened to the inside of the bonnet of said vehicles or laid directly over the engine and fixed by closing the bonnet. In the case of some motor vehicles, it may be necessary to protect the foam mat against contact with the exhaust routing and/or belt drives. The foam mat provided over the engine of a motor vehicle is intended to protect people against burns, deaden noises and also have the effect that, in the cold season, warming up of the engine is speeded up or made possible with little loading of the engine, as a result of which the specific fuel consumption of the engine and the harmful concentrations of exhaust gases as well as engine wear are reduced. It is advantageous if the foam mat can be removed easily and quickly from the engine compartment, in order to serve in emergencies as a fire blanket or underlay.
