A skeining device for reinforcing the ends of wires wound on coils has front and rear needles (15, 21) and a vehicle, which carries guide eyes for the wires. In order to reinforce the wires by skeining, the vehicle (1) is guided round a closed track by means of chains. The guide eyes (2) thereby run around the needles (15, 21). In so doing, the wires are retained by the respective needles (15, 21). Subsequently, the front needles (15) are rotated, to turn the wires arranged in a plurality of layers into skeins. The rear needles (21) are drawn back through a stripping plate (22) to strip the skeins which have been formed, which are then drawn through the needle holders (10). The rear needles (21) can be drawn back through the stripping plate (22) independently of one another. In this way, a needle (21) can be drawn out for the course of a skein-forming operating cycle to avoid skeining of a particular wire. This permits testing of the device when it is being set up or after a wire has been torn during operation. <IMAGE>
