As a result of increasing traffic density, traffic jams are occurring increasingly frequently and thus the vehicle occupants' driving competance and health are being put increasingly under strain. In a traffic jam, the engine is often operated at low speeds of revolution and in low load ranges and principally in idling mode. This results in the production and emission of a particularly large amount of carcinogenic hydrocarbons. By installing an interchangeable and regenerable activated carbon filter unit in the ventilation system, the exposure of the vehicle occupants to noxious substances can be considerably reduced. By installing identical or similar filter units in the region of the exhaust system the amount of noxious substances in the environment as a whole can be advantageously altered.
