Blind rivets with insulating overlying sleeve - uses plastics insulation to prevent corrosion and to allow rivet to be used as part of electrical connector

The blind rivets have integral sealing and electrical insulation sepg. the rivet from the sheet metal it is fastening. This prevents corrosion, arising from dissimilarities in the metals, and also to permit the use of the rivet as part of an electrical connector (23). The rivets are fitted with an insulating sleeve (2) of an elasto-plastics material, obtd. by moulding or heat-forming, prior to use. The rivet is clamped onto the sheets it joins by the conventional method of drawing of a metal rod (24), which has its head (5) embedded in the rivet, so that the rivet is flattened over the sheet surface until the tensile force on the rod becomes high enough to snap it at a weak point inside the rivet.
