In a record player having a turntable guided on the stator side in a rotary bearing and having a rotary drive for the rotation of the turntable, the object is to avoid torque surges in the drive and avoid stray magnetic and electric fields in the region of the sound pick-up. A novel type of record player is presented, in which the turntable (4) has at a distance from its centre axis (2) a plurality of nozzles (8) which, connected to a compressed-air source, are arranged to generate the thrust by subsonic free jets approximately in the direction of rotation; to reach and maintain the nominal speed of the turntable (4), a device for controlling the air throughput is provided. <IMAGE>
