In a stranding machine for wires or cords, the mechanical tension prevailing in each wire or each cord is determined by a measuring device which supplies an electrical output signal corresponding to the tension. In order to keep the strand tension constant automatically, the output signals are compared with a desired value in a respective comparator circuit. The difference is transmitted in the form of electrical control signals to the electromotively driven braking devices of the individual reels, and the braking torques are each varied in such a way that the tensions in the individual strands are always approximately constant.
