In a device for the step-by-step forward movement of a shaft in the axial direction, a cylindrical piston is provided initially which surrounds the shaft and is held such that it can move in a reciprocating manner in the axial direction between a front and a rear limit position, with the aid of a suitable drive. During its forward movement, the piston is coupled to the shaft in the front limit position. However, this coupling is released when the piston is moved to the rear limit position. In consequence, the piston takes the shaft with it during its forward movement but the piston leaves the shaft in the pushed forward position during its return movement. The reciprocating movements of the piston in this way ensure a step-by-step forward movement of the shaft.
